Prevent is part of the UK Government’s Counter-Terrorism strategy, CONTEST. Its aim is to protect people from harm by stopping them from becoming involved in or supporting terrorism.

What is Prevent?

Prevent is one strand of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST, which has four elements:

  • Protect – Strengthen protection against a terrorist attack.
  • Prevent – Stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
  • Prepare – Reduce the impact of a terrorist attack.
  • Pursue – Stop terrorist attacks.

What is the Prevent Duty?

The Prevent Duty is part of wider safeguarding responsibilities. It sits alongside other duties to protect people from harm, abuse, and neglect. It requires specified authorities—such as Education, Health, Police, and Criminal Justice agencies—to identify and support individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalisation.

How Does Prevent Link to Safeguarding?

  • Shared Purpose: Both aim to protect individuals from harm.
  • Early Help: Prevent identifies risks early and provides support before harm occurs.
  • Duty of Care: Prevent is part of the legal safeguarding framework for professionals.
  • Multi-Agency Working: Prevent uses the same collaborative approach as safeguarding—schools, health services, local authorities, and community partners all work together.

Objectives of Prevent

  • Tackle the ideological causes of terrorism.
  • Intervene early to support those at risk of radicalisation.
  • Help those already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate.

Prevent is part of CONTEST, the government’s counter-terrorism strategy and is designed to safeguard individuals from being drawn into terrorism or supporting terrorism. Our interactive sessions will help teams recognise and respond to concerns, understand the risks of radicalisation, and confidently apply the principles of Prevent.

This training will cover:

  • The role of Prevent within CONTEST
  • The Prevent process and how it works in practice
  • How to make a referral confidently and appropriately
  • Key trends and ideologies shaping the current threat landscape
  • Current priorities
  • Signs to look out for

They can also provide leaflets in English and a variety of other languages should you require them.
