Safeguarding Adults Board Training, Learning and Professional Development

Nottingham City Safeguarding Adults Board are now offering a range of fully-funded webinars and training to professionals from any agency, including the voluntary and community sector.

Our courses focus on specific themes identified in audits, Safeguarding Adults Reviews and SAB Strategic Priorities and are designed to build upon and complement your own agency’s safeguarding training, not replace it.

Before you book or attend any Nottingham City SAB training, you should:

  • Complete your own agency or organisation adult safeguarding training.
  • Have a basic understanding of the local Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County joint SAB policies and guidance available in the ‘Resources for professionals’ section of this website.
  • Read the guidance about any pre-reading and check if the course is relevant to your role before booking.

Safeguarding Training Quality Assurance

This checklist can be used to assure yourselves that your introductory level safeguarding adult training is up-to-date and meets minimum requirements.

  • It can also be used as a means to assure yourselves of the suitability of any training you may buy in.
  • Will be kept under review by the Training, Learning and Improvement Subgroup in consultation with NSAB.

You can view the Safeguarding Annual Review Checklist by clicking the link below and downloading the file.

Please note: When you have used this checklist, this does not enable you to include the NCSAB / NSAB logos on your training materials, However, you may use the following statement: Our training materials include all the recommended content included within the ‘Training Content Checklist’ provided annually by the NCSAB/NSAB.

Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) Training

Nottingham Recovery Network offer free, interactive training session to help increase your knowledge and confidence in offering support and advice to others.

This in-person 3-hour session is full of hands-on learning, interactive activities, and practical insights.

During the session, you’ll explore:

  • The risks and dangers of alcohol use
  • What alcohol units are and how to calculate them
  • How to use the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and have supportive conversations about the results
  • How to provide safe harm reduction advice and signpost people to specialist services

But this training isn’t all theory. You’ll get to:

  • Step into someone else’s shoes with beer goggles and experience the effects of alcohol
  • Join in with interactive challenges testing your knowledge of standard drink serving sizes
  • Practice giving advice with confidence
  • Take part in quizzes and friendly competitions

By the end of the training, you’ll walk away with practical skills, a solid understanding of alcohol-related risks, and confidence in supporting others—all while having a fun, engaging experience that sticks with you.

In 2026, Nottingham City SAB published a Executive Summary and Learning Briefing for a Safeguarding Adults Review for ‘Lisa’. The review highlighted the importance of robust alcohol screening processes to ensure that alcohol-related risk is routinely and consistently identified at the earliest point. Without such screening it is not possible to build an appropriate individual response and it will be harder to build a case for a general improvement in the approach to alcohol use disorders. The SAB therefore encourage professionals in all agencies to attend this training.

Institutional Discharge – Learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews

This free webinar brought together the learning from research into a range of local, regional and national Safeguarding Adults Reviews (SARs) relating to Institutional Discharge. This webinar focussed mainly on sharing areas of good practice and tips for front line practitioners and used the SARs as case examples to demonstrate the negative impact of poor, uncoordinated discharge but also the positive impact when things are done well. It is hoped that the learning from these case examples will provide you with some insights that you can bring into your own practice and share with your teams.

This webinar was delivered by Nottingham City SAB through the Nottingham Practice Development Unit.
